Done

My KLC broke last night, and that prompted me to think about getting back to my Kindle Paperwhite 3. But I wanted a little bit of a different experience compared to

Goals

  • No ads on Kindle
  • Use KOReader to break away from the Amazon Ecosystem. Kinda.

Found this great site that details how I can jailbreak my Kindle. Following that, I first charged the Kindle coz it’s been ages since I’ve used it. Around 40%, connected it to my laptop and got to work.

First I had to install something WinterBreak, that actually does the jailbreaking on the Kindle. Post that, had to apply a “hotfix” that persists the jailbreak across reboots and OTA updates. On that note, it would be wise to NOT update the Kindle automatically. Aise bhi koi khaas feature nai aate ispe.

For that I had to install something called KUAL (Kindle Unified Application Launcher). That gets installed using MRPI. So I got onto those, following instructions from the site. Note, that the mrpi installer only starts after a reboot post the hotfix installation. Once done, i got this “book” that is basically the KUAL home screen. It seems “applications” in the traditional sense are called “extensions” in the Kindle jailbreaking community.

Anyway, after KUAL and MRPI installation, I added an “extenion” called Rename OTA Binaries that renames the binary in the Kindle OS that does the OTA update. Cool.

Then I installed KOReader coz I really wanna get into it. Seems like cool OSS project.

Annnnnd done!

Now I will figure out how to add books to my Kindle through Calibre and read them on KOReader. If I can get a lot of my Cosmere Library and some Malazan books on there, I’ll consider this project to be a success.

Quite simple really. KOReader has a plugin pre-installed for calibre. And on Calibre, I can start a wireless server that can send and receive books and stuff. Simply added the connection details into the KOReader app on the Kindle, and it quickly connected.

Can’t take too many files at the same time for transfer, but one at a time seems to work.

This endeavor was succesful :D
