Possibly one of my favorite novellas from Sanderson, this book is set on the Sel planet in the Cosmere.
The highlight of this book for me was the Invested Art that’s used throughout called Forging. The entire way the magic system worked was extremely analogous to programming in the real world. So much so that I still maintain that I would be an excellent Forger, or attempt at being one if Investiture was real.
Another interesting aspect, from a wider lore perspective, was how many different Arts are there on the Sel planet. Probably coz of the whole Splintering of Dominion and Devotion by Odium. Still, Forging and AonDor are very programming friendly, so yay.
This book, amongst other Cosmere novellas, is a perfect book to read for someone who hasn’t gotten into the Cosmere yet. This was my original recommendation, before Tress of The Emerald Sea came along, to absolute beginners coming into the whole High Fantasy/Epic Fantasy genre.
